Scope

Redesign an existing recipe and workout app to make it simpler, faster, and more user-friendly. The app will focus exclusively on 15-minute recipes and workouts, allowing users to make healthy choices without spending much time.

Solution

The solution has a user-friendly, minimalist design focused on providing quick access to 15-minute recipes and workouts. Through simplified navigation, time-controlled features, and personalized recommendations, users can easily find effective and fast ways to make healthy choices without spending much time.

Starting with

Research & Insights

User insights

I started by analyzing Influencer Desirée Andersen’s existing app, then interviewed an Instagram follower of Andersen, who shared:

"I delete health apps because they overwhelm me with information. I just want something quick and easy."

Competitive Analysis

“Something quick and easy”. To identify opportunities for improvement in the app’s redesign, I began by exploring competitors within the same health and lifestyle domain. The ‘Sulten’ app is one of them.

Comparing

After comparing the Sulten app and several similar apps, I gathered key insights to incorporate into my redesign. Here are some of them:

- More prominent and intuitive buttons for better navigation

- Favorite function for saving recipes

- "Most Popular" section to highlight trending content

- User reviews with star ratings for better decision-making

- Articles on profile pages for additional insights and tips

- Add ingredients directly to a shopping list for convenience

Designing with users in mind

I then conducted a user test within my chosen domain—health and lifestyle. Using a Google Form, I sent targeted questions to students who follow the health and lifestyle influencer, Desirée Andersen, on Instagram. I chose this group because I had previously redesigned her app, allowing me to gather feedback from users who share similar interests and are part of the same target audience. This approach gave me valuable insights into the features most relevant for the app.

Persona

To clarify my goal, I used the insights I gathered to develop personas. The purpose was to design a solution that considers the unique needs, desires, goals, and challenges of each persona. Here is one of them.

Crazy Eights

Before I started sketching my low-fidelity wireframes, I explored all possible ideas and solutions using a method called Crazy Eights. I marked the features I liked with stars and chose to move forward with those before proceeding to create my wireframes.

Brainstorming

I began with brainstorming to explore different solutions and ideas.

Architectural Structure

Then I developed the architecture to organize the information intuitively. This helped me visualize the user journey and establish a solid structure before moving forward with the design.

Low- Fidelity

Mid- Fidelity

User tests revealed that using “primary” colors for buttons, navigation, icons, and links strengthens brand identity and highlights interactive elements. I also incorporated “supporting colors” to enhance communication, add visual interest, and emphasize key points.

High- Fidelity

I moved the search bar lower for better accessibility, and by utilizing the four-point grid system, the placement of elements became more precise. After user testing, I added a profile button to the ‘bottom-bar’ to enhance navigation and improve the user experience.
